Endodontic Retreatment in Memphis, TN

There are many factors that may result in additional issues after a root canal treatment. In some cases, the entire infection was not removed during treatment, and in other instances, a new disease might have developed in the tooth. When the tooth demonstrates signs of a disease again, our endodontic team at Memphis Endodontics will generally suggest an endodontic retreatment. Similar to the original root canal treatment, endodontic retreatment can be done to clean out the canals of the tooth and remove the current infection. In case you still have pain or signs of an infection following a root canal, schedule an exam at one of our offices in Kirby, Collierville, Bartlett, or Memphis, TN to determine if you need an endodontic retreatment or another treatment.

Endodontic retreatment offers a second chance to save your tooth and alleviate pain without the need for extraction. Some benefits of this procedure include:

  • Preserves your natural tooth structure
  • Relieves pain and discomfort
  • Eliminates infection and prevents further complications
  • Enhances the longevity of your dental health
  • Avoids the need for more complex and costly dental procedures

Your endodontic retreatment procedure will be done in our office using oral sedation to temporarily numb the needed region. Once you are prepared, one of our endodontic specialists — Drs. Harris, Wells, Scott, Cain, Dagen, or McCreary will reopen the tooth and remove the filling material placed during the preceding process. The interior of the tooth, including each of the tips, will be thoroughly disinfected. After the tooth is cleaned and examined, it will be strengthened with brand-new material and then sealed. A dental restoration (bridge or crown) is generally placed over the treated tooth for strength.

Following your endodontic retreatment, you may want to take a few days to rest and recover. Our team will give you specific instructions that will help you heal after your procedure, including the ideal method to clean your mouth. You might be given a prescription for pain relievers or antibiotics that need to be taken as directed. Once your mouth has healed, you should stick to a good home oral care routine with daily flossing and brushing. In addition, you should schedule yearly exams at Memphis Endodontics so Bradley Harris can monitor the tooth and your total oral health.

If you are looking for a great Endodontist, look no further because Dr. Scott and his team at Memphis Endodontics Collierville are PHENOMENAL! This was my first root canal procedure and I was a little nervous about this appointment. However, from the minute I began talking to Cher and Dr. Scott, I was instantly at ease. They were so kind, caring, and just overall AMAZING!! Dr. Scott thoroughly explained to me what to expect about the procedure and was very mindful about the tooth pain I was experiencing during his examination. You can tell that he really cares about his patients. I hope I don’t have to return anytime soon, but if I do, I know that I am in great hands. Thank you for turning an unpleasant experience into a pleasant one!

I was referred to Memphis Endodontics By my primary dentist. I called because of how far out the appointment was booked, and they got me in the next day at their Collierville location. Upon arriving, I checked in and was introduced to Dr. Scott. They promptly started reviewing my case. To say I was a little nervous was an understatement. Dr. Scott and his team found out it was my birthday, and we made some jokes about what a wonderful birthday present. But honestly, the experience was phenomenal. I had to keep myself from falling asleep during the procedure. It was so easy, and he explained everything every step of the way. He had a new hire he wad training, and he was very detailed and explained everything he was doing. I was very impressed with his teaching. I will refer people to Dr. Scott and his team. Hopefully, I will not be back anytime soon except to visit :-) Thank you again for making a not-so-pleasant experience wonderful and taking all my pain away.

Endodontic retreatment can be recommended for individuals who have previously undergone a root canal treatment but continue to experience persistent symptoms such as pain, swelling, or infection in the tooth. It is typically performed by an endodontist, who is a specialist in treating issues related to the dental pulp and roots of the teeth.

What should I expect during the recovery period after endodontic retreatment?

During the recovery period after endodontic retreatment, it is normal to experience some discomfort and sensitivity in the treated area, which typically subsides within a few days. It is important to follow post-procedure care instructions provided by your endodontist, such as avoiding chewing on the treated side of your mouth until the tooth has fully healed. Over-the-counter pain relievers can be used to manage any discomfort.

How can I prevent the need for further endodontic treatments?

To prevent the need for further endodontic treatments, it is crucial to maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using an antiseptic mouthwash. Regular dental check-ups will allow your dentist to monitor the condition of your teeth and catch potential issues early. Avoiding hard and crunchy foods that could fracture your teeth and refraining from habits like clenching or grinding your teeth can also help preserve your dental health.

What are the signs that I might need endodontic retreatment?

Signs that you might need endodontic retreatment include persistent pain or discomfort in the tooth that was previously treated with a root canal, sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts after the stimulus is removed, swelling or tenderness in the gums near the tooth, or the appearance of a pimple-like bump on the gums near the area of the treated tooth. If you experience any of these symptoms, it's advisable to visit your endodontist for an evaluation to determine if retreatment is necessary.
